Feeding problems and gastrointestinal diseases in Down syndrome.
This study lists the various anomalies on the basis of 504 references selected from a PubMed search in October 2018. RESULTS: The anomalies are grouped into three categories: anatomical anomalies: duodenal atresia and stenosis (3.9%), duodenal web and annular pancreas; aberrant right subclavian artery (12% of children with DS with cardiac anomaly); Hirschsprung's disease (2.76%); anorectal malformation (1.16%); congenital vascular malformations of the liver; orofacial cleft, bifid uvula (4.63%), and submucous orofacial cleft; esophageal atresia (0.5-0.9%); pyloric stenosis (0.3%); diaphragmatic hernia; malrotation of ...

Prevalence and risk factors for gastroschisis in a public hospital from west México
Abstract Mexico is recognized as a country with a high prevalence of gastroschisis, although the cause of this remains unclear. We define the prevalence and potential risk factors for gastroschisis in a public hospital from West México. A case‐control study was conducted among 270 newborns, including 90 patients with nonsyndromic gastroschisis (cases) and 180 infants without birth defects (controls), born all during the period 2009 to 2013 at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara “Dr. Juan I. Menchaca” (Guadalajara, Mexico), from out of a total of 51,145 livebirths. Potential maternal risk factors for gastroschisis were...

Gastroschisis and young mothers: What makes them different from other mothers of the same age?
ConclusionA previous pregnancy loss was identified as the main risk factor for gastroschisis, while an increased use of sex hormones, perhaps related to the previous loss, could trigger a disruptive mechanism, due to their thrombophilic effect. Gastroschisis and Autism —Dual Canaries in the Californian Coalmine—Reply
In Reply In their letter, Reece and Hulse suggest there may be a correlation between cannabis consumption and gastroschisis based on the high consumption of cannabis in counties where we have found high rates of gastroschisis. To be clear, Reece and Hulse are inaccurate in their statement that we “found rurality was a risk factor for cannabis use.” Instead, we found higher rates of gastroschisis in rural counties. In a follow-up study, we found that fetal exposure to drugs other than alcohol, cocaine, narcotics, or hallucinogenics (odds ratio [OR], 3.27; 95% CI, 1.05-10.15;P = .04) and other noxious substances (OR,...

Gastroschisis and Cumulative Stressor Exposures
Background: Gastroschisis, a congenital defect of the abdominal wall, occurs disproportionately more in offspring of young mothers and has been increasing in prevalence over the past decades. A wide range of exposures have been reported in association with an increased gastroschisis risk, independent of mother’s age; many have also been correlated with stress responses. Methods: We explored cumulative exposures to such stressor exposures among 1,261 mothers of gastroschisis cases and 10,682 mothers of controls in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (1997–2011). We considered 16 exposures as stressors in th...

Early Alcohol Use in Pregnancy Tied to Gastroschisis
TUESDAY, April 3, 2018 -- Alcohol consumption early in pregnancy may be a risk factor for the development of gastroschisis in neonates, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal& Neonatal Medicine. Jean R....

Are cannabis prevalence estimates comparable across countries and regions? A cross-cultural validation using search engine query data
Conclusion: Although GSI showed weaker associations with cannabis use than perceived availability, the findings underline the external validity and usefulness of search engine query data as external criteria. The findings suggest an acceptable relative comparability of national (provincial) prevalence estimates of cannabis use that are based on a common survey methodology. Search engine query data are a too weak indicator to base prevalence estimations on this source only, but in combination with other sources (waste water analysis, sales of cigarette paper) they may provide satisfactory estimates.

Visual search for feature conjunctions: an fMRI study comparing alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) to ADHD
Conclusions: Limited activation patterns in ARND suggest problems in information processing along the ventral frontoparietal attention pathway. Poor integrity of the ILF, which connects the functional components of the ventral attention network, in ARND subjects may contribute to the attention deficits characteristic of the disorder.

Web search activity data accurately predict population chronic disease risk in the USA
Conclusions The high predictive validity of web search activity for NCD risk has potential to provide real-time information on population risk during policy implementation and other population-level NCD prevention efforts.

Attentional capture by alcohol-related stimuli may be activated involuntarily by top-down search goals
AbstractPrevious research has found that the attention of social drinkers is preferentially oriented towards alcohol-related stimuli (attentional capture). This is argued to play a role in escalating craving for alcohol that can result in hazardous drinking. According to incentive theories of drug addiction, the stimuli associated with the drug reward acquire learned incentive salience and grab attention. However, it is not clear whether the mechanism by which this bias is created is a voluntary or an automatic one, although some evidence suggests a stimulus-driven mechanism. Here, we test for the first time whether this a...

Google search data as a novel adjunct to patient and public involvement in rheumatology research
AbstractPatient and public involvement is essential in the design and implementation of research studies to ensure research remains relevant and in line with public priorities. Public views on a given area of research may be sought via platforms such as focus groups or surveys. Here, we present the use of an openly available Google search data query tool, which may be used alongside traditional forms of patient and public involvement in research to highlight public perceptions and priorities. We used an online search query tool ( “AnswerThePublic.com”) to explore public Google searches relating to “arthritis,” and ...

Chemokine ligand 2 and paraoxonase-1 in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: The search for alternative causative factors.
Abstract The incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is constantly increasing. Despite this is apparently associated with the growing increase in obesity, insulin resistance and obesity-related metabolic disturbances their presence is not a necessary or sufficient condition to explain the accumulation of fat in the liver. Conversely, NAFLD is a predictor of other metabolic risks. NAFLD is currently the most frequent chronic liver disease but should not be considered benign or anecdotic because a considerable proportion of patients with NAFLD progress to cirrhosis and end-stage liver d...

International patent applications for non ‐injectable naloxone for opioid overdose reversal: Exploratory search and retrieve analysis of the PatentScope database
Conclusion. We find consistent direction of development of intranasal sprays to high‐concentration, low‐volume formulations with bioavailability in the 20–60% range. These have potential to deliver a therapeutic dose in 0.1 mL volume. [McDonald R, Danielsson Glende Ø, Dale O, Strang J. The Search for Contributors to Low Rates of Recognition of Paternal Alcohol Use Disorders in Offspring from the San Diego Prospective Study.
CONCLUSIONS: In the SDPS, FHM sensitivity was most closely related to the father's drinking characteristics, not the offspring characteristics. While unique aspects of SDPS families potentially limit generalizability of results, the data demonstrate how the FHM can offer important initial steps in the search for genetically related AUD risks in a subset of families.
